Safer &
Better Roads
- Increase the rate of road sealing
within Rodney by making money go further.
- Seek solutions to improving the
standards of road maintenance.
- Provide safe pedestrian, cycle,
and equestrian links across Rodney.
Budget items
- Improve pedestrian safety and options by
constructing footpaths particularly where they finish incomplete circuits and
are outside schools, such as at Ahuroa School, on Pakiri Road from Leigh to the
Sawmill, Mahurangi East Road from the Gull Station to the new development, and
Albert Road to SH1 along Hudson Road.
- Make roads
through busy villages safer for non-vehicle users (walkers, cyclists, horse
riders) by funding from the Community Safety Fund, road safety improvements to
Whangateau and Puhoi Villages such as driver feedback signs and additional road
markings.
- Extend the Omaha
community’s walking and cycling options by constructing the Omaha Drive footpath
from Broadlands Drive to the Community Centre.
Non-budget / Advocacy
- Empower and
encourage communities to raise their road maintenance and safety issues in a
constructive manner, and ensure they are listened to, such as identifying
sections of road used heavily by stock trucks, milk tankers, logging trucks,
and slow moving farm vehicles, for interim functional improvements where
sealing is some time off.
- Lift the level
of communication with Auckland Transport by convening a community liaison group
to aide communication and limit disruptions during the sealing of Ahuroa Road.
- Make Warkworth
township more age-friendly by working with Auckland Transport to improve
accessibility for elderly pedestrians and mobility impaired.
Preparing
for Growth
- Lobby NZTA for improvements on
our State Highways (SH1 & SH16).
- Ensure Rodney gets its fair share
of regional spending.
- Make town centres, parks, and
facilities fit for the future.
Budget items
- Help secure Warkworth township’s future as
a character village while allowing for appropriate growth by carrying out a
Centre Plan.
- Create a
multisport facility that’s fit for the future by progressing the development of
the Warkworth Showgrounds in consultation with the community.
- Respond to visitor demand by constructing new
toilets and changing rooms at William Fraser Reserve, Omaha Beach.
- Respond to the recreation needs of active
and younger people by upgrading the Snells Beach skate park in consultation
with local youth and skaters.
Non-budget
/ Advocacy
- Work towards a solution for traffic
congestion by continuing to advocate to NZTA and central government for the
reconstruction of the Hill Street intersection as soon as possible.
- Advocate for
funding to expand the Warkworth Library and to create a new civic space in Baxter
Street with multi-purpose community buildings including meeting and shop front
space for the Rodney Local Board.
- Consult with the
community on the future of our recreational spaces, ensuring that activities
such as horse riding, which is part of Rodney’s character, remains accessible.
Connecting
Communities
- Improve access to public
transport for better connectivity throughout Rodney.
- Lobby Central Government and
Transport Agencies for an efficient public transport solution for the North
West.
- Encourage and support the growth
of a recreational trail network.
Budget items
- Relieve parking
congestion in Warkworth by building a park-n-ride at the Atlas Site between
Kowhai Park and the Warkworth Showgrounds to create a new transport hub. This
will ease pressure in Warkworth township for commuter parking and bus
congestion, and provide for overflow parking for the Showgrounds during busy
events and sports weekends.
- Expand the
public transport network to service Leigh and Puhoi by exploring options either
through Auckland Transport or as part of the Transport Targeted Rate when funds
become available.
- Offer
recreational, visitor and commuting options by supporting the completion of
walking and cycling connections from Snells Beach to Warkworth, and from the
Showgrounds to the Cement Works.
Non-budget
/ Advocacy
- Work with the
school bus network providers to request a new route from Puhoi to West Coast
Road, re-routing in a loop from Puhoi to Mahurangi College via Ahuroa School.
This would remove congestion at Puhoi village and allow pickups en route,
creating safety improvements and time savings for buses and parents alike.
- Ensure horse
riders are catered to in the development of trail networks.
Protecting
the Environment
- Improve the quality of our
harbours and waterways.
- Encourage community initiatives
for environmental sustainability.
- Advocate for and support
effective monitoring and enforcement of regulations.
Budget items
- Improve
biodiversity by funding pest management plans where community groups are ready
to implement them.
- Clean up water
quality in our streams and harbours by supporting environmental and community
groups such as Awa Matakana and Whangateau Harbour Care, with riparian
fencing and planting.
Non-budget
/ Advocacy
- Improve the
ability of the Mahurangi River to flush itself by advocating for further
funding to continue its dredging programme.
- Make Zero Waste
a condition of all events supported by the local board via grants or permissions
on our parks.
Working
with our Community
- Involve the community in planning
for the future.
- Guide and connect communities
with council to advance local projects.
- Support partnerships between
government agencies, business, iwi, and communities to find smarter ways
working together.
Budget
items - Create community
participation and ownership of parks and reserves by supporting volunteers to
do planting, track building and maintenance.
- Support the establishment
of a Business Improvement District for Warkworth if supported by a majority of
businesses.
Non-budget / Advocacy - Protect and
promote of heritage sites in Warkworth through supporting applications for
regional grants.
